Daptomycin is a cyclic lipopeptide extracted from the fermentation broth of *Streptomyces reseosporus*. It is indicated for the treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections caused by certain susceptible Gram-positive strains, such as abscesses, surgical site infections and skin ulcers. It is also used for right-sided infective endocarditis caused by *Staphylococcus aureus*, and bacteremia caused by *Staphylococcus aureus* complicated with RIE or complicated skin and soft tissue infections. It disrupts bacterial membrane function in multiple ways and rapidly kills Gram-positive bacteria. In addition to acting on most clinically relevant Gram-positive bacteria, it is notably potently active in vitro against isolated strains that have developed resistance to methicillin, vancomycin, linezolid and other antibiotics.
