It is a fusidic acid antibiotic with a steroid skeleton, whose chemical structure is similar to that of cephalosporin P and is not a hormone. It is produced by the fungus *Fusidium coccineum* or certain *Cephalosporium* spp. Its mechanism of action is to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis, exerting bacteriostatic or bactericidal effects. It has strong antibacterial activity against staphylococci (including methicillin-resistant strains and strains resistant to other antibiotics), and certain antibacterial activity against streptococci, enterococci, *Corynebacterium diphtheriae*, clostridia, Neisseria species and mycobacteria. It has weak activity against *Bacteroides fragilis*.
